The United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announced that it is preparing a budget of $3.6 million for the development of a hardware called MORPHEUS, a new approach to cybersecurity.
As a government agency that is responsible for the development of emerging technologies used by the US military, DARPA said that the creators of the new project refer to their project as the unsolvable puzzle. They explained that instead of just providing software patches to cybersecurity vulnerabilities, MORPHEUS will directly solve the problem.
MORPHEUS is a hardware developed so that data can be randomly and quickly shuffled in a computer. University of Michigan’s computer science professor and project head Todd Austin tried attacking the MORPHEUS and defined it as like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube game. “Every time you blink, I rearrange it,” said Todd, describing the new hardware.
The professor adds: "What's incredibly exciting about the project is that it will fix tomorrow's vulnerabilities.” He also said that he had never seen such kind of security system that is future proof.
DARPA also said that almost 40 percent of recent software exploits can be reduced because of their new project. These hardware weaknesses DARPA defined includes information leakage, code injection, and cryptography.
DARPA admits that while the machine may not totally be unhackable, they are optimistic that it would be an elegant answer to some of the most annoying types of cybersecurity issues being faced nowadays.
