German mapping service provider Here Company has recently joined Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority in its plan to map the city with high-definition technology as part of the city’s support for autonomous vehicles.
The initial plan of Here Technologies and RTA is to run a series of tests to ensure the function of Here’s map in the self-driving cars. They will also test the HD Live Map, which is a self-updating map meant to provide users with detailed information about their road conditions.
RTA’s corporation technology support services CEO Abdulla Al Madani said, “RTA has always been a forerunner in harnessing the most sophisticated technologies through collaborating with the world’s best providers.” Al Madani adds that this collaboration is meant to make the residents, visitors, and tourists of Dubai satisfied and happy.
The partners also plan to use the Open Location Program of Here so that they can connect the vehicles to other vehicles, traffic lights, and other road infrastructure. OLP also enables various automakers and organizations to transmit anonymized live sensor data that can be collected and sent back to the cars to provide them with geo-targeted information relating to their present environment.
Here’s Senior VP of Internet of Things Leon van de Pas pointed out that Dubai has already recognized the value of location technologies to make the transportation in the city more sustainable, safer, and efficient.
