A new app has recently been strongly criticized by some and admired by others for giving men a “more manly” look. It’s called the Manly App.
While women have face-altering and filtering apps, men are now given the option to make themselves more masculine. “Meet the manly version of yourself,” highlighted the app on its Twitter page. It offers men to photoshop their images, such as putting biceps and abs and other ways to improve their physique. It even provides the option for users to select hairdos, tattoos, beards, and have clearer skin.
However, the app has been criticized by body positive activists, as reported by Independent UK. The news claimed that these activists view that the app can damage the male body ideals and perpetuate unrealistic body goals. A national movement of body image and body confidence Be Real Campaign’s co-founder Denise Hatton said, “Apps like Manly play into the damaging narrative that to be considered an attractive man, you need to look a certain way.” Hatton also said that body image struggle does not only affect the women but also men who want to live up to the ideal beauty set by advertising and media.
Other reviews also pointed out to the positive traits of the app, such as posting the photo that says “Nothing is impossible,” referring to making the app as a body goal to be stronger.
