The PlayStation has been one of the benchmark console platforms for gamers alike for many years now and is the reason why Sony established itself as a dominant brand with regards to gaming for more than 20 years already. The first iteration of the PlayStation system was released more than 25 years ago, and the fans of that classic may enjoy the recent new development by Sony far more than the average gamer.

Hot on the heels of the ‘retro console’ devices, like that of the SNES Mini, Sony has just announced that they will release the new ‘Playstation Classic’ for users to enjoy on December 3. Like the SNES Mini, it comes preloaded with games on it, 20 to be exact. These 20 games were the ‘genre-defining’ titles that changed the way games were made, like that of Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3 and so on.

The new console would also come with 2 classic style PS1 controllers for the games that support multiplayer modes and would give another notch to nostalgia for gamers and fans alike.

The new console is reportedly about 45% smaller than the actual PS1, and it has the same look and feels that the original had, including similar controllers and packaging, to better capture the feel when the device first came out all those years ago.

“Long time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who be might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all.”

Sony has been on fire lately with their promotions, with Red Dead Redemption 2 to come within a few months and the new reveal of this console spells greater success for the company.

Hopefully, we see more of this ‘retro console’ trend extend to other countries, and who knows? We may get an Xbox Classic, or an N64 Classic sometime soon.
