Music streaming internet service Pandora radio is launching new desktop apps beginning with a native desktop application for Mac, a Windows version of which will soon follow.

The new desktop app features keyboard controls, on-screen notifications for the currently playing music, and a control panel for Pandora's new "Modes" feature for music customization on users' Pandora stations.

Pandora Modes launched a couple of months ago with the idea to provide users with more control of how the streaming service's customization algorithm works—even without users making their own playlists for the same experience, TechCrunch reports.

This function is made easier on the new desktop app, the tech news site adds, as it allows users to just click on one of the many options to tweak their Pandora stations.

For the keyboard controls feature, TechCrunch says users would need to enable Accessibility permissions in their Mac's settings. Enabling this setting will then activate various functions on the Mac keyboard such as play, pause, replay, skip, shuffle, or thumbs up or down the songs.

On-screen notifications pop up as a song plays, providing users details about the song such as title, artist, and album.

While it's a clean and simply-designed native app that makes Pandora easier to use, there's nothing really notable about it. Regardless, many users now prefer a native desktop app compared to a web experience—especially for features such as notifications, keyboard controls, and the fact that users wouldn't have a hard time looking for the Pandora tab as they work on other things on their browser.

The only things missing from the new desktop app are podcasts, which have been a large and growing focus in recent months for other streaming services such as Spotify and Apples iTunes. Pandora did launch a Podcast Genome Project and even featured podcasts from SiriusXM's talk shows. However, these and others of their kind aren't available when searched.

Pandora said podcasts are currently available on mobile only, wherein podcasts are shown above the "Featured Playlists" section, but they did not disclose further information.
