Fans of Nintendo’s Castlevania video games will be glad to learn that Netflix has purchased rights to develop an animated series based on the game. The company has released a first trailer for the series.

Castlevania is the story of the Belmonts, a family of vampire hunters, and their ongoing fight with Dracula. The game made its debut in Japan in 1986. It was subsequently translated into English and ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System platform a year or two later.

In the trailer, Netflix starts with a 1980s vibe as a Castlevania cartridge is inserted into a Nintendo game console, with old-style graphics on the screen as a result. Further nostalgic graphics are displayed until footage from the new series finally appears on the screen, 41 seconds into the trailer.

”Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself,” says the show’s synopsis.

The trailer doesn’t reveal much of what the series will look like. The overall tone seems grim and forbidding.

According to producer Adi Shankar, Netflix hopes the program “will end the streak and be the western world’s first good video game adaptation.”

Episode one of the series will be released on July 7. Three additional episodes will be released during 2017, with a second season making its debut in 2018.
