In a bid to gain the lead in next-generation communication technology, China has started the third phase of research and development of 5G. It moves towards becoming a pioneer in the said technology as China Mobile Corp and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd revealed the world's smallest 5G testing terminal on Friday.

The third phase comes as a preparation to have 5G products ready by the time the first version of 5G standards come out next year in June, says China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The ministry is also pushing for more upgrades in testing environments as well as more experiments with 5G-enabled applications.

This move comes ahead of schedule, as officials have previously stated that the tests would start next year. With contributions from companies like Huawei, ZTE and Ericsson, the second phase of tests were completed earlier this year.

While most testing machines are heavy, some even needing to be carted by trolley, the 5G testing device showcased by China Mobile and Huawei last Friday is only around the size of Amazon.com Inc.'s smart speaker. Equipped to convert high-speed 5G signals into Wi-Fi signals, it can be used in the testing of 5G pre-commercial networking.

As part of China's move to commercialize 5G services by 2020, China Mobile aims to deploy 10,000 5G base stations by the same year.

These developments in 5G technology are indications that China is moving towards becoming a leader in the global telecom sector, as affirmed by Huang Haifeng, an expert at telecom industry website cww.net.
